This is the biggest cause of death worldwide, at <strong>63%<\/strong> of deaths.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1990, about <strong>40%<\/strong> of deaths from non-communicable diseases were in low- and middle-income countries, compared with about <strong>75%<\/strong> today. This surge can be traced to four areas: tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, insufficient physical activity, and unhealthy diet\/obesity.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>More than <strong>1.2 million<\/strong> adolescents die worldwide every year \u2013 and nearly all those deaths are preventable.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over <strong>40%<\/strong> of largely preventable NCD deaths occur during the most productive life period, before age <strong>70<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<h3>THE PREVENTABLE DISEASE PICTURE<\/h3>\n<p>Cardiovascular diseases take the lives of more than <strong>17 million<\/strong> people worldwide each year \u2013 the world\u2019s biggest killer &#8211; projected to cause <strong>22 million<\/strong> deaths each year by 2030.<br \/>\n<em>Centers for Disease Control, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.13 billion<\/strong> people worldwide now suffer from high blood pressure \u2014 the majority in low- and middle-income countries. This number has almost doubled in the last 40 years.<br \/>\n<em>NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, 2016<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The number of people worldwide with diabetes has almost quadrupled since 1980: from <strong>108 million<\/strong> to <strong>422 million<\/strong> adults in 2016 (<strong>8.5%<\/strong> of global population). Factors driving this dramatic rise include obesity.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2016<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The number of new cancer cases is expected to rise <strong>70%<\/strong> over the next 2 decades.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2016 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Intrinsic genetic risk factors (&#8220;bad luck&#8221;) represent only <strong>10-30%<\/strong> of the lifetime risk of getting many common cancers. The rest are things one can prevent.<br \/>\n<em>Stony Brook University, 2016<\/em><\/p>\n<p>More than <strong>1 in 3<\/strong> adults aged over <strong>18 <\/strong>years is now overweight.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2014 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>More than <strong>10%<\/strong> of the world\u2019s population is now obese. Obesity levels have risen in all nations from 1980-2015 and at least doubled in<strong> 73<\/strong> countries.<br \/>\n<em>I<\/em><em>nstitute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>One fifth<\/strong> of adults worldwide will be obese by 2025.<br \/>\n<em>NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, 2016<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to obesity, the &#8220;Anglo-Saxon&#8221; world is hit hardest: More than a quarter (<strong>50 million<\/strong>) of the world&#8217;s severely obese, and one-fifth (<strong>118 million<\/strong>) of the world&#8217;s obese adults, live in high-income, English-speaking countries: the U.S., the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland.<br \/>\n<em>NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, 2016 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chronic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and cancer could be cut by <em>at <strong>least in half<\/strong><\/em> if people adopted healthy lifestyles such as regular exercise, diets low in sodium and added sugars, and abstained from using tobacco.<br \/>\n<em>American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 2015<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>THE ECONOMIC COST OF PREVENTABLE DISEASE<\/h3>\n<p>The global cost of largely preventable chronic diseases (cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, cancer, diabetes, and mental health) could reach <strong>$47 trillion<\/strong> by 2030.<br \/>\n<em>World Economic Forum, 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a very conservative estimate, physical inactivity now costs the world <strong>$67.5 billion<\/strong> a year\u2013 and this is only measuring 5 of 22 diseases directly linked to physical inactivity. The real costs are likely to be two to three times higher.<br \/>\n<em>Univ. of Sydney, 2016<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The total economic cost of smoking (health expenditures and productivity) totaled <strong>$1.44 trillion<\/strong> in 2012, or nearly <strong>2% <\/strong>of the world&#8217;s annual GDP.<br \/>\n<em>WHO &amp; American Cancer Society, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy investing just <strong>$1-3 dollars<\/strong> per person per year, countries can dramatically reduce illness and death from largely preventable NCDs.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>WHO Director-General, 2016 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yet, less than <strong>2%<\/strong> of international development assistance for health goes to fight NCDs.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; text-transform: none; line-height: 30px; font-weight: 400;\">The Causes of Preventable Disease<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/reasonsmoonshot.jpg?format=original\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h3>TOO LITTLE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY<\/h3>\n<p>Globally, <strong>1 in 4<\/strong> adults is not physically active enough. In high-income countries, <strong>26%<\/strong> of men and <strong>35%<\/strong> of women are insufficiently physically active, as compared to<strong> 12% <\/strong>of men and <strong>24%<\/strong> of women in low-income countries.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>More than <strong>80%<\/strong> of the world&#8217;s adolescent population is insufficiently physically active.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<h3>POOR DIET<\/h3>\n<p>Poor diet (low in whole grains, fruit, nuts, seeds and fish oils and high in salt and sugar) is a factor in <strong>1 in 5<\/strong> deaths around the world.<br \/>\n<em>I<\/em><em>nstitute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Diet is the <strong>second <\/strong>highest risk factor for early death, after smoking.<br \/>\n<em>I<\/em><em>nstitute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, 2017)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>11%<\/strong> of the world&#8217;s population was undernourished in 2016.<br \/>\n<em>I<\/em><em>nstitute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>MENTAL &amp; EMOTIONAL HEALTH DISORDERS<\/h3>\n<p>More than a <strong>billion <\/strong>people worldwide live with mental health and substance misuse disorders.\u00a0Depression is one of the top <strong>10 <\/strong>causes of ill health in all but four countries.<br \/>\n<em>Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Depressive disorders ranked as the <strong>third <\/strong>leading cause of the global burden of disease in 2004, but will move into first place by 2030.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2012\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to happiness, humanity is only about halfway up the ladder, with an average global happiness score<br \/>\nof <strong>5.3<\/strong> out of <strong>10<\/strong><em><strong>.<\/strong><br \/>\nUN\u2019s World Happiness Report, 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION<\/h3>\n<p>Environmental pollution is now responsible for <strong>16%<\/strong> of all world deaths: killing <strong>3X <\/strong>more people than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined and <strong>15X<\/strong> more than wars and all other forms of violence.<br \/>\n<em>Simon Fraser University, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Twelve million<\/strong> people die annually as a result of living or working in an unhealthy environment (from exposure to air and water pollution, climate change and chemicals). That&#8217;s almost one in four of global deaths.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Every year, environmental pollutants kill an estimated <strong>1.7 million<\/strong> children under the age of five. That means one in four deaths for children aged one month to five-years-old.<br \/>\n<em>WHO, 2017 <\/em><\/p>\n<h3>UNHEALTHY WORKPLACES &amp; WORKFORCES<\/h3>\n<p>Worldwide, the cost of unwell workers represents 10-15% of global economic output.
