This section summarizes a sampling of five studies \u2013 providing just a taste of the available research.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Chronic Insomnia Linked to 40% Increase in Dementia Risk<br \/><\/b>A large, long-term study from the Mayo Clinic, tracking 2,750 adults (aged 50 and over) for an average of five and a half years, found that chronic insomnia leads to changes in the brain that result in a much faster decline in memory and thinking. Chronic insomniacs were\u00a040% more likely to develop cognitive impairment or dementia over the study period than people that got good sleep. Participants underwent brain scans each year that measured two markers of future cognitive trouble: the buildup of amyloid plaques, and spots of damage in the brain\u2019s white matter.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12425456\/\">Access this study on sleep health<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nightmares Linked to Rapid Biological Aging and Early Death <\/strong>\n<p>A 2025 study from Imperial College London, analyzing\u00a0183,000 adults and 2,400 children,\u00a0found that those who had bad dreams once\u00a0a\u00a0week or more had shorter telomeres, associated with faster cellular aging. They also found that those who experienced regular nightmares were three times more likely to die before the age of 70 compared with those who did not\u2013\u2013concluding that\u00a0nightmare frequency may be a stronger predictor of premature death than smoking, obesity, poor diet or lack of physical activity.\u00a0The researchers note that\u00a0the release of the stress hormone cortisol during bad dreams, and the disruption of restful sleep which upsets the body\u2019s overnight cellular repair processes, could play roles in the accelerated biological aging. But the researchers note that future studies are needed to determine whether treating nightmares could actually slow biological aging and reduce mortality risk in the general population.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2485267-nightmares-linked-to-faster-biological-ageing-and-early-death\/\">Access this study on sleep health<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Catching Up on Sleep on Weekends Associated With 20% Lower Risk of Heart Disease <\/strong>\n<p>A study presented at the 2024 European Society of Cardiology meeting examined data from 90,903 adults in the UK Biobank project, a database holding medical and lifestyle records of 500,000 people in the UK. Of these, 19,816 met the criteria for being sleep deprived. Over a follow-up period of 14 years, the researchers found that the people who had the most extra sleep during the weekends were 19% less likely to develop heart disease than those with the least amount of weekend sleep. The lowered risk of heart disease was even more pronounced for people who regularly experience inadequate sleep on weekdays.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.escardio.org\/The-ESC\/Press-Office\/Press-releases\/Catching-up-on-sleep-on-weekends-may-lower-heart-disease-risk-by-up-to-20\">Access this study on sleep health<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weighted Blankets Help with Insomnia<\/strong>\n<p>A 2020 study from Swedish researchers found that people with depression and other mental health issues slept much better through the night when using a weighted blanket. At the end of the trial, 42% of those that slept with an 18-pound blanket scored so low on the Insomnia Severity Index to be considered in remission from their sleep troubles, compared with 3.6% of the control group. The weighted blankets didn\u2019t have a significant effect on total sleep time, but led to a significant decrease in waking after sleep, less daytime sleepiness and fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/jcsm.aasm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.5664\/jcsm.8636\">Access this study on sleep health<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Artificial Light at Night Linked to Mood Disorders in Teens<\/strong>\n<p>A large 2020 study from the NIH (10,123 US teens) is the first to show that exposure to outdoor, artificial light at night negatively impacts teens\u2019 mental health. Teens exposed to higher levels of nighttime light are more likely to have a mood disorder (including anxiety and bipolar disorder and phobias). This adds to the evidence that disruptions to circadian rhythms contribute to certain mental disorders.\u00a0The findings also show that teenagers who belong to racial\/ethnic minority groups or who come from lower-income families are more likely to live in areas with high levels of outdoor light at night, so are more at risk.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/outdoor-light-linked-teens-sleep-mental-health\">Access this study on sleep health<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Poor Sleep Increases Risk for Heart Disease, Stroke &amp; Atherosclerosis<\/strong>\n<p>A major 2020 study (1,600 participants) from the University of California Berkeley explains why disrupted nightly sleep and clogged arteries are pathologically intertwined.
